Not a day goes by that on social networks does not break out a controversy concerning some celebrity/influencer who, says or does a little bit too much.

A few days ago it happened (we could say again) to the queen of US social networks, Kim Kardashian West, who after having broken through as a reality star and entrepreneur in the world of cosmetics and beyond, has decided to launch a new collection of underwear.

So far you might think “nothing new”, but just because we talk about Kim, you can’t stay quiet for a moment.

As announced through its social media profiles, the queen of the Kardashian house has launched a line of shapewear, that is an intimate modeling. These underwear items would consist of highly technical solutions for any type of body and would allow, depending on the result to be obtained, to enhance, thin or lift and sculpt one’s body. They are essentially bras, high-waisted shorts or shorts that would behave like sheaths, and are available in nine different colors, suitable, therefore, for every shade of leather, and for all sizes, starting from XXS up to 4X.

These sheaths can be worn under any tight-fitting dress or garment, to give the possibility of trying to enhance one’s body or eliminate physical defects.

And here is where the case breaks out on social media. The real question is: “Kim was the case?” Certainly the desire of this collection was not to denigrate the concept of body positivity: we all know that, especially Kim, he has always worn this type of clothing in order to afford to enter the mini-lattex fluo dress.

The web has really split. Many have shouted “shame on you Kim!”, To produce a line that goes against the concept of body positivity of which today, even the social media are healthy carriers (thankfully). There are those who, on the other hand, have simply emphasized the reality of the facts, or rather that there are people who, unfortunately, cannot accept themselves and do not feel themselves in their own bodies.

Third solution, it could be that Kim simply wanted to point out that she too, every day shows us her model workouts on Instagram, she needs to use products of this kind but she had not, until now, found a garment suitable to its forms, therefore inclusive. So it would look like one of us.

Furthermore, the accusation of undue cultural appropriation by Japan has been added to this controversy. The line was, in fact, called “Kimono” which, to most people, appears to be a simple play on words concerning his first name, but which has, in fact, also some reference to the Japanese kimono. The idea had to be that, this sheath wraps the body of women in a sensual way like the Japanese kimono but…  Japan said no.

The Japanese are very jealous of their culture and have stated that “There is no respect for what the garment means in our culture. We wear kimonos to celebrate health, the birth of a child, marriages, graduations, funerals. It is a celebratory leader and is handed down from generation to generation of families”. After this, the hashtag #KimOhNo (brilliant!) was even launched on Twitter.

Kim responded to the accusation made by the Japanese, issuing a statement to The New York Times, in which he states that his intention was absolutely not to disrespect Japanese culture and the meaning of the kimono and that he will no longer produce clothes who can harm or annoy Japanese culture.

In all this controversy with continental features, perhaps, we could never really take the side of Kim or accuse her. The reality is that everyone has their own vision of themselves. There are those who have achieved full confidence and those who are still fighting it. The real point is that no matter how social media, society, brands try to spread this (right) concept, what is important is that caring for oneself and having confidence starts with the individuals themselves.

Apart from Kim Kardashian and her modeling girdles, photoshop and apps of various kinds and types to change the features, we should let each of us make our own journey into himself and eventually find himself in his own sphere without thinking that we whether someone or something tells us what is right or not for our body.

Let each of us, really slowly, really love himself, without being told how to go our way.
