How many times did you happen to return home after an evening of sun, night and maybe in a quiet street, feeling completely at the mercy of events? How many times have you prayed that nothing would happen to you until the key was inserted into your door bolt? How many times have you really been afraid of shooting in solitude in a city that you didn’t know so well.

These are some of the questions that the creative team of Wher the new app set to achieve its goal in the best possible way. Which? To create a practical and intuitive digital platform that collects practical information from a real community of girls who advise each other on how to explore cities in the most peaceful and serene way possible.

The app will be officially presented tomorrow and for the moment we have asked the founders a few questions to give you a brief preview:

From which input did the project start? From a particular experience or a general reflection on the subject of women’s safety?

The idea of this application was born at the beginning as the answer to a personal need, I was organizing one of my solo trips a few years ago and I was looking for information on where to go and what to see, when I realized that no tourist guide answered to a question that I had instead: in which area should I stay to feel at ease returning home alone? What are the safest roads? I am a woman who travels alone and although my worries do not stop me, I am aware that for a woman to walk down an unfamiliar street, perhaps at night, involves a certain level of danger, perhaps not real but certainly perceived.
I wondered if it was just my problem and the answer they gave me at the beginning of the first interviews I did with what would become Wher’s first users afterwards, I collected many stories about women, how they move in the city, the strategies they use to feel safer, like calling a friend or keeping the keys in your pocket. Then came the numbers of the ISTAT surveys that say that in Italy, one woman in three (36.6%) declares not to go out at night out of fear, while the men who declared the same thing are 1 in 12 (the 8.5%). Among the women who go out at night, one in three always claims not to feel safe, while the men who have declared the same thing are one in ten, around 19%.

In addition to using the app, what other advice would you give to a young woman who travels alone in the city?

The first and most important advice is to get informed correctly and in advance, before going to a new place in the city or to a new city. This is important in order not to be influenced by the opinions of others but to choose independently. Wher is a beginning to get informed and gain self-awareness, based on how other women tell about their daily experiences. But just as our service offers information on how to get around safely in the city, other blogs and communication projects are also involved in contributing to women empowerment.

The other advice we give is to take part in the activities of the city, to become short, active and aware towns. This also allows you to get to know people who share your same values, and to make new friends and important ties. For example, we often organize events dedicated to our Community of Wherriors, where girls know each other, make bonds and discover new things about the city together. In fact, our events are often in partnership with the territory, this allows us to let our users know about some realities they would not otherwise have known.

Unfortunately it is true, even in 2019 it is dangerous to go around at night, or sometimes even during the day, in many cities for a single woman. Where does this problem come from? And have you encountered more serious cases than others? Or cities where this problem does not exist?

Thanks for the question because we really want to fight this stereotype. In fact, our message is NOT to tell women “be careful where you go”. Wher rather wants to put women in touch so they can suggest different ways to get around their cities. Where is it? Where they want.

We are clearly faced with a cultural problem, so rooted that it has become normal. As if this condition were a given condition and not the result of choices made. Every cultural revolution needs to be tackled from many sides, but all of them need a starting point.

In Europe we have won many rights on women’s freedom, we must be proud of it and the road is still a long way to go. We have the dream of starting here, and getting to know and making known where Wher could make a difference and think of Latin America or India. In every country where we will be, we know that we will have to deal with different cultures and awareness about the role of women.

The project has very nice graphics and equally accurate storytelling. What do you take inspiration from to create this?

Thank you! Graphics and storytelling are a very important point for us because we know that we are carrying out a project with a social impact and we want it to reach as many people as possible, so the attention to communicative details is essential. For inspiration instead we have an inexhaustible source of ideas, proposals, contents… it’s our community! Our Wherriors are at the center of everything and with them we design and decide every aspect of our service and our events online and offline. Thinking about them we can make our content always useful and interesting.
