Louis Vuitton Cruise20: a step into the future

The French fashion house presents a new heroine

If I had to imagine a woman in a contemporary comic strip and had to draw it, I would certainly identify her with a woman with a metropolitan soul and even a rock, with a look that expresses a strong personality and with details that refer to a “Spockian” flavor, to Star Trek, however, without giving up its femininity.

Here, a little 60s, a little 80s and a bit to the dark and futuristic New York.

Yes, if I had to, creating it would be just like that and if I had to give it a precise style I would give it that of the new Cruise20 by Louis Vuitton by Nicolas Ghesquière.

Never before this year, in fact, the French designer at the head of the famous fashion house, has succeeded in perfectly channeling its avant-garde style with the sartorial concept of the world of fashion houses.

Everything has been taken care of to the smallest detail, to ensure that the concept of the future metropolitan world of the future New York is best represented.

For this reason the choice of location could not have been more accurate. The fashion show took place in the perfect setting of the TWA Flight Center at JFK airport in New York, a building that has been abandoned for more than ten years, designed by Eero Saarinen.

A veritable futurist vortex, where the entire architecture is a game of well-defined curves, like the lines of Vuitton’s new collection.

Just like the structure of the location, even the new woman of the French fashion house is completely overwhelmed within the tortuous games of the city where she lives, a mix of fashion and architecture.

The entire collection is based on parallelisms: the city and technology, the super-modern architecture with that of the Art Decò and Paris-New York, a round-trip journey.

Yes, because the entire collection is precisely the journey of Nicolas Ghesquiere from his city, Paris, New York, as a tourist model, he too gets fascinated by this world of lights, huge skyscrapers and the gloom of the city at night. From here, the creation of the future heroine, who moves dynamically between spaces, the immense streets, and heights, the immense skyscrapers.

The futuristic Vuitton woman wears clothes with structured, well-defined lines, which are reminiscent of the famous skyscrapers of the Big Apple and accompany the body as if to give it dynamism, strength and even speed. The new metropolitan heroine opts for micro capes and giubottini with harsh and dark colors, accompanied by a feminine taste for embroideries and sequins. There are also jackets, always in leather, but also satin with the most famous buildings in the city. In leather there are also two-colored miniskirts and trench coats. Huge shoulders reminiscent of Star Trek and reminiscent of the architecture of the Big Apple.

There are also very contemporary garments such as sweatshirts that recall the world of Batman / Bruce Wyne (always a duality) and Gotham City or again, classic pinstriped dresses and shirts that bring back the passion for the sartorial world and that identify this heroine as also a career and successful woman.

In total 60 looks that represent a woman in continuous action, dynamic, but who never renounces her femininity.

Even the accessories have an important role in the collection, and are perhaps that element capable of closing the circle of these continuous parallels and of representing the metropolitan concept desired by the stylist.

There are the inevitable iconic bags of the Maison, such as the famous Alma or the Petite Malle, which for the occasion have joined the high-tech world. The famous bauletto, for example, has been revisited in a technological key with two micro screens, one on the right and one on the left, which show the images of the current show. The two micro screens represent the illuminated windows of New York skyscrapers, the windows on a metropolitan, dynamic, fast and even fashion world, in which the life of our heroine lives and takes place.

A collection but endless dualities: the Art Deco and its lights, represented by embroidery, sequins and structured shapes; the art of comics and its dynamism and strength, represented by garments in bicolor leather, strong and with harsh colors; the return flight Paris-New York, represented, instead, by the futuristic and maison duality, therefore a concept of modernity that, however, always looks at the artisan, sartorial world from which everything starts.

The Louis Vuitton Cruise20 collection represents the scenario of the fashion world in this last period. Technology, being in step with the times, is what is most important today, being left behind is what no one can afford to do, but looking at tradition, from which everything started, is fundamental indeed. a duty. Without what has been there could not be the world today.

Looking at tradition does not mean being backward, on the contrary, today, looking also at tradition and knowing how to link it to the new world, this is the real talent; and we can say that Nicolas Ghesquière is a true example.
