A few days before the “Game of Thrones”’ final epic battle between the good and the evil, which has been announced as shocking and full or twists, it is urgent to focus on Arya’s character, the true hero of the series (together with the deus ex machina Melisandre). And it is important as well to acknowledge all those female characters who made history (of cinema and of our fantasies as well) through their independent spirit and their chic short bobs.
Arya Stark has been a crucial character, a delicate chrysalis who genuinely and naively faced danger in order to become an angel of vengeance, never loosing her purpose and her integrity. The art of perseverance led her to transform into a fatal ninja, but also a patient and inquisitive soul who protects her beloved ones at all costs.
The sex scene with Gendry, consumed a few hours before the battle that might have ended it all, was criticized by many or mocked by others. But it actually showed Arya’s sensitivity and passion for life, which perfectly juxtaposed to her cold impassible attitude when she duels the enemy. And since she knows what she wants, she refused with gentleness Gendry’s proposal and the prospect of a quite boring life as a lady imprisoned in a castle. And so we left her alone at the end of episode 8, while she’s heading to King’s Landing to tick the final names from her avenging lullaby.
Scarlett Johansson’s been another great performer of badass sensual girls looking for trouble. She played the beautiful “Lucy” in Luc Besson’s homonymous movie, where she was a young woman, betrayed and left alone, who gained some sort of superpowers that she used to avenge herself. Her messy soft blonde bob and her sinuous body always in action contributed to make her a symbol of feminine strength and independence. She also played a sexy manga heroine in “Ghost in the Shell”, where she had a black bob and a body made to kill.
Natalie Portman’s Mathilda, the very young heroine of Luc Besson’s “Léon: The Professional”, resembles Arya for her background story and her precocious transformation. Portman, who was only 13 at the time, portrayed a little girl whose father was a drug dealer killed by the mob. She eventually develop a paternal relationship, which sometimes becomes platonic love, with her executioner. In a very short and intense period she grows up so much and evolves into a tough girl looking for self justice.
Mathilda’s story resembles another glorious cinematographic parenthesis which is all devoted to woman empowerment and splatter scenes. It is O-Ren Ishii’s, played by the exotic Lucy Liu. She saw her dad killed in front of her and she sworn to avenge him one day, just like Arya did. In a few years she’s turnt into an arousing serial killer, an infallible sniper, a tough boss who sits at the table with the Chinese mafia and beheads whoever dares to contradict her with her one-of-a-kind katana. Her talent allowed her to become a member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad together with Black Mamba aka Uma Thurman, her only worthy rival.
Women’s stories about revenge and stereotypes’ subversion are always interesting to read and analyze. In times when this earned freedom for women as their own destiny’s masters seems to be in danger, there’s surely the need to enjoy powerful stories such as Arya’s.
