Chanel: the last of Karl

There are those who quote a local song would say: “90 minutes of applause” or maybe even more; because the last Chanel show, which took place at the Grand Palais in Paris, was not only an undisputed masterpiece, but a real gift left us by the legend, the kaiser, Karl Lagerfeld.

A minute of silence at the beginning of the show and in the background the voice of the designer during one of his interviews; nobody talks, everyone is there at the Grand Palais, astonished, perhaps even unprepared, as if time had stopped. And then those words “the beat goes on”, everything must continue. A warning, an advice for those facing any kind of adversity.

Everything in the smallest details reminds him: the location that, for the occasion, has turned into a mega skiing village, with lots of snow on the catwalk; a project, a vision, born in that mind that has created one of the most beautiful collections of the French fashion house. That elegance that few can create. And elegance is the second distinctive feature; someone could say that it is impossible not to talk about elegance with Chanel, but this is a different, unique, steady elegance.

Impossible to choose the most beautiful looks, everything in every detail was perfect. The Chanel world, but above all of Karl Lagerfeld, has been enclosed, more than the past collections, in sweet and classic looks. You do not feel any kind of “heavy” winter in the long coats in check and pied de cock; or in men’s cut suits, the latest trend for next winter. Everything was perfectly in harmony with the chosen winter theme; just like the snow that is laid light and imperceptible on the ground, so every single garment that made up the look, hovered gracefully on the catwalk.

Not only suits and garments, but also dresses, like the one worn by Kaia Gerber, with embroidered snowflakes on top and a snow-white balloon skirt. A very iconic look for its meaning, is the one worn by Penelope Cruz, the designer’s friend, composed of a snowy balloon skirt and a mini sweater with overlapping ruffles; all completed by a white rose brought by the actress in honor of her friend.

Even the cascades of bijoux, with the iconic pearls of the brand, have been the masters, especially combined with the jacket-pants suits, in perfect Chanel woman.

In the front row, full of emotion, there were some supermodels and stars, but above all, great friends of Lagerfeld, like Claudia Schiffer, Monica Bellucci, Kristen Stewart, who was also testimonial of the brand. Big absent Inès de la Fressange, model and muse of Lagerfeld, who did not feel, for the too much pain, to take part in the parade.

On the catwalk, on the other hand, some of the designer’s favorite supermodels were paraded, like Cara Delevigne, who closed the fashion show at the head of the group of models, particularly moved, Kaia Gerber, Mariacarla Boscono and Vittoria Ceretti who, was his bride at the last SS19 fashion show.

The entire collection has been supervised by Virgine Viard, for thirty years alongside Lagerfeld, who timidly leaves only a few seconds, and visibly moved.

At the close of the show a timeless song, Heroes by David Bowie, with all the models standing on the catwalk, as a sign of respect and devotion towards the one who, more than anyone, has changed the fashion world forever.

Since 19th February everything has stopped a bit, something has changed, indeed, must be changed.

Karl Lagerfeld taught us to be elegant, bon ton, sweet and dreamy; a master who, with a simple white sheet and a pencil, was able to create masterpieces. A creative mind and a vision that few in the fashion world have and have had; but as he himself taught us “The beat goes on…” and so:

Long live the Kaiser, long live the King.
