WMN role models: Lady Gaga

Singer, musician, actress, fashion icon… Lady Gaga: a true “Star is Born”

By

When it comes to Lady Gaga it might be kinda hard to begin a conversation, simply because you don’t know where you should start. The American singer has a 10-year long career made of ups & downs, great love stories & heartbreaks, controversial problems and crazy looks, … and these are the reasons why she’s such an inspirational artist followed by millions of fans, who can empathise with her story. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia2

  • The singer
She has a versatile voice, she can play music instruments and write amazing songs that go from pure pop to rock n’ roll sounds to country ones, and she can also wander in a crooner parenthesis together with the legendary Tony Bennett, … she’s simply a music genius. Since “The Fame” came out 11 years ago, she experimented different sonorities, from the darkest lyrics to the deepest ones (or the happiest of course), and she collaborated with icons such as Beyoncé, or fought with others like Madonna (Gaga was seen as her heiress back in the “Born This Way” era – but was it real competition or just a stratagem to gain more attention? In the end it seems that they are good friends, since they posed together at the Oscar’s After Party). Every record meant a brand new makeover on herself: she worn the McQueen’s “Armadillo Boots” in the “Bad Romance” video, she was shot by Jeff Koons for the “Artpop” album cover, she became a wild runaway in “Telephone” featuring Beyoncé, with Castelbajac’s costumes and a very Tarantino-inspired short movie, she rocked a no-make-up make-up for the promotion of “Joanne”. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia3 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia4 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia5 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia6
  • The performer
Her tours around the world are very exciting and moving. Lights, costumes, the stage, the dancers, … contribute to create that spectacular atmosphere full of energy and with a surrealist touch (very Gaga style), but the Lady comes out too, when she sits at the piano and sings her deepest songs. She often involves the audience, inviting on the stage a lucky fan who has a story to tell, and how Gaga was helpful to make the fan’s dreams come true and changed or even saved their lives. The singer herself gets very emotional and her performance never disappoints. When she broke her hip a few years ago during a show she kept on singing, and a few years later she performed during the Halftime Show of the Super Bowl, dressed in glitters, with high hills: she landed on stage attached to a couple of ropes, appearing like an angel from the stadium’s roof. She sang the American hymn dressed in a stars&stripes outfit (supplied by Gucci), and played several duets in New York with Tony Bennet, … a real stage animal. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia7 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia8 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia9
  • The actress
Her professional rebirth coincides with the third remake of “A Star is Born” beside Bradley Cooper. In this movie Lady Gaga goes natural and she shows herself in all her imperfections and fragilities, vulnerable and beautiful at the same time. It is mainly thanks to Lady Gaga if the movie got so much attention by the media and the audience and reached the Hollywood temple of the Oscars. Even though the movie had many nominations, it just won the prize for Best Song for “Shallow”, and their duet was the sweetest and most passionate ever, and probably the most touching moment of the entire ceremony. This movie couple really makes us dream and reminds of the old stylish ones. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia10 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia11
  • The lover
The big heart of Lady Gaga is capable of carrying the love of many people, not only in a sentimental way. As it is shown in the very personal documentary “Gaga : Five Foot Two” (Netflix), the artist has very strong bonds with her family, starting with her beloved aunt Joanne, who died at only nineteen because of Lupus, and who was definitely a creative artist. Gaga dedicated her last record to her (and her second name is actually Joanne). Her lovers: Taylor Kinney, an actor met on the set of “Yoü And I” and her fiancé before they broke up, and Christian Carino, her longtime manager, way older than her, who gifted her an insanely beautiful diamond. Now that this story is over too, the most wants to see her with Bradley Cooper … whatever it is or will be, Gaga deserves all the love of this world. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia12 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia13
  • The fragile girl
In the Netflix documentary the audience is able to see a very intimate side of Gaga’s life, and the singer opens up about her biggest emotional scars, such as depression and drug abuse. She slightly confessed her problems in some of her lyrics, including “Dope” and “Mary Jane Holland”, and eventually confessed her problems and her struggle to get through it. The drug abuse was in part connected to her chronic pain. A few years ago she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which causes very hard muscular cramps all over her body. It’s very touching to see her lying on her sofa while she receives a massage. She’s in pain and she has questions: “And I don’t even know, like, what a childbirth will be like. Or if I can. I know I think I can get pregnant. I just don’t know, like, what are my hips going to do? I don’t fucking know”. Hearing these words and seeing her strength and understanding her fears … she’s so beautiful in her sincere transparency and vulnerability that it is impossible not to fall in love with her. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia14 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia15
  • The fashion icon
Here’s a million dollar question: how many outfits did Gaga wear during during her career? It is likely impossible to answer correctly, but the only sure thing is that the star is a one-of-a-kind when it comes to express herself through fashion. She dares to wear anything and she’s so versatile she can rock basically everything, from the all-meat dress to the blonde wigs, from hot pants and cowboy boots to micro bikinis with shells, from dramatic makeup to a simple pink hat, … The latest phase of her fashion evolution is very diva-like, made of elegant little black dresses or dreamy gowns such as the Valentino one worn on a red carpet. Sometimes she’s more Lady, sometimes she’s more Gaga (“crazy and bizarre”, an homage to her myths, the Queen): she’s always perfect, no matter what. wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia1 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia17 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia18 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia19 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia20 wmnrolemodelsladygaga_acrimonia21
